General Conditions

Followed snow machine tracks on the road and then the trail over to the open area just past Red Butte. From there, followed planned GPS route to the edge of Mud Creek Canyon. Walked a little ways up the ridge to find a spot to down climb that wasn't near vertical or with a big moat next to the cliff. Downclimbed into the canyon that had soft easy to kick in snow but some of it was a bit slidy so faced in most of the way with two tools. Walked up the canyon 1/8 mile to find good place to cross and ascend. Stayed around 10 feet above the lowest part of the canyon to avoid falling through to the stream below. There was at least one noisy visible steam running down the East side of the canyon.

Climbing rangers quote from Green Butte Ridge on March 26 "Breakable crust, supportable crust, hot powder, moist chalk, wind sculpted sastrugi, smooth butter...you name it, it's probably out there" applies to the climb out of the canyon and a short distance to get to the Clear Creek route. Unfortunately there is even less snow on the route.
