It was incredibly busy this weekend in Avalanche Gulch, with hundreds of climbers ascending the mountain from the south side.
For those still looking to climb, ski and ride in the Gulch, expect to be walking on dirt for 2.75 miles above the Bunny Flat Trailhead before reaching consistent snow. Above that, smooth snow conditions exit for climbing, skiing, and riding. Moderate rock fall was observed during afternoon hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Expect to encounter sections of rock and snow above 13,000 feet.
Crampons, an ice axe, and the ability to use them are require for those to looking to climb Mount Shasta via Avalanche Gulch. Pack-out Bags, Wilderness Permits, and Summit Passes (required for all who travel above 10,000 feet on the mountain), are available at the Bunny Flat Trailhead.
