Recent Observations:
In the last 24 hours, about 7-9 inches of new snow has fallen. Total height of snow on Mount Shasta is 80 inches. West and southwest winds have ranged from 11 mi/hr to 30 mi/hr, gusting up to 55. Temperatures have averaged 21.5 ºF.
Though still early in the storm, observations from yesterday indicated moderate to strong west and southwest winds were beginning to build cornices and wind slabs near treeline. Signs of storm slabs appeared near and below treeline. A weak layer below the 12/28 soft, rime crust produced easy failures. This weakness is widespread near and below treeline. It disappears as you reach higher elevations where wind effects have dominated.
Mountain Weather:
High pressure is swinging in warmer air from the tropics. Snow levels are already begining to rise. Temperatures at 7,000 ft will be in the low 30s rising to above freezing. Expect clouds at all elevations. Winds will range from the southwest to west as you climb. They will increase from light to gale force. Snow levels will steadily grow from 4,700 ft to 6,700 ft tomorrow. Up to a quarter inch of precipitable water is available today. This will manifest as wet snow at lower elevations. Upper elevations could get as much as 5 inches by tomorrow.
Snow levels will sky rocket late Wednesday and Thursday. We may get another dose of snow at lower elevations on Friday. Stay tuned.
