Recent Observations:
The height of snow on Mount Shasta near 7,600 ft is 76.7 inches. In the last 24 hours, temperatures have ranged from 27 ºF to 40 ºF. West winds have been light varying from 3 to 16 mi/hr, gusting to 31.
Wind and warmer temperatures have transformed the snowpack. Snow sleuths may still find low density snow in fully shaded, wind protected areas. The last snowfall in the area occurred on Friday 1/7 with 2-4" of accumulation. Temperatures since then have been warm, with daytime highs in the mid-thirties at all weather stations near treeline. Nighttime lows have been in the mid-twenties. A couple of widespread crusts can be found near the snow surface.
Some wind drifting of the new snow has occurred, mostly depositing snow onto north facing slopes. Drifts, slabs, and cornices have been stubborn to trigger. Very few signs of instability have been seen and generally good bonding has developed at the interface of the old and new snow.
Mountain Weather:
High pressure will continue to influence our weather into next week. Light south winds will become moderate and westerly as you ascend above treeline. Expect low forty and high thirty temperatures below treeline. Above, temperatures will be near freezing. Some sun may find its way through the high altitude clouds drifting through the region. No precipitaiton is in the forecast for the foreseeable future.
