Recent Observations:
The height of snow on Mount Shasta near 7,600 ft is 76 inches. In the last 24 hours, all weather stations have reported above freezing temperatures - the Old Ski Bowl temperatures have ranged from 34 ºF to 50 ºF. West winds have been mostly light varying from 9 to 18 mi/hr, gusting to 31. Winds in Avalanche Gulch yesterday were calm until 9,500 feet where light down hill gusts began.
Some thin, light density snow could still be found at Castle Lake yesterday, and shady, wind protected areas in the Eddies still held several inches on Monday. But generally speaking, the snowpack is transitioning to a springtime configuration. Melt-freeze cycles are creating those soft on firm snow surfaces. This was evident in Avalanche Gulch yesterday afternoon after 1 p.m. on aspects exposed to direct sun.
No notable instabilities in the snowpack have been observed over the last several days.
No ice fall was observed yesterday in Avalanche Gulch, but there is plenty of rime ice caked to the Red Banks.
Mountain Weather:
Junuary is in full effect - sunny days and cold nights are ahead. Some high level clouds may linger today but mostly sunny and clear conditions will prevail. Winds are picking up. Expect south and southwest winds to become strong as you ascend into the alpine regions. Warming temperatures may create gusty conditions. No precipitation is in the forecast until late next week.
