Recent Observations:
Temperatures at the Old Ski Bowl have ranged from 15 to 38 ºF. Last night sustained northerly winds reached 48 mi/hr and gusted to 95 mi/hr. Yeehaw! Over the last month we have lost about 20 inches of our snow pack. Current snow depth is 62.5 inches.
Snow surfaces are highly wind-affected, variable, and tracked out. Expect firm, teeth-chattering sliding conditions. Look to slopes that receive direct sun during the day for softer snow. Anything hit by the wind is scoured to crusts or exposed rock. Mid to low elevation southerlies are melting out.
Climbing conditions on Mount Shasta are good. Rock and ice fall have been observed. An ice axe, crampons and a helmet are mandatory tools if attempting to go high.
No signs of avalanches or instability have been observed for weeks.
Mountain Weather:
A strong north flow aloft will create some rowdy conditions today especially above treeline where winds could reach gale force speeds. Weak, unsecured tents may find their way south of the border. I'd expect some gusty, moderate winds below treeline, too, even in town as north winds flow down the I-5 corridor. Cold temperatures will continue today, though temperatures will trend upwards and return to a spring-time cycle by tomorrow. No precipitation is in sight.
