Recent Observations:
Yesterday was a windy one, great for flying kites, sailing and showing off Old Glory. As for the snowpack, it does nothing. New snow from earlier in the week has already been forgotten about. Near and above treeline is scoured to old snow surfaces, and rock. Some new snow has collected in low-lying areas. Below treeline, you might find better conditions, if the snow is not littered with tree debris. Underneath the patchy, new snow, you'll find a worn, tired snowpack, colored with blown dirt and roughened by sun and wind. Rocks, stumps and other obstacles are showing. Sounds sweet, eh? Yeah, we are as depressed as you are about the winter. But hey now, keep that chin up. There is still plenty of usable snow. Climbing conditions have been good. Slick, hard ice is not widespread. As temperatures warm, be prepared for falling rock and ice. Climb early, wear a helmet, and keep your head up.

Mountain Weather:
The temperature in Mount Shasta is 27ºF, four degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. At Gray Butte, 8,000 feet, it's 29.5ºF, thus a slight inversion this morning. North/Northeast wind will begin to subside today, but still expect breezy conditions over higher terrain for the morning hours. Temperatures are on a warming trend into the weekend. Freezing levels will hover near 5,400 feet tonight. A blip of weather is expected Sunday or Monday, but this storm will not be any sort of game changer.
