Recent Observations:
In the last 24 hours, temperatures at 8,000 ft have dropped from from 33 to 10.5 ºF. Northwest winds were moderate to strong, though have become light through the night.
Whatever snow we get today will sit on top of a hard pack that is roughened by wind, sun, tracks, and dirt. The south side of Mount Shasta holds a snowpack resembling that of late spring and early summer. Plenty of rocks and other obstacles are exposed.
Mountain Weather:
A changing weather pattern has begun to deliver cold air from the far north. This means that over the next several days we'll experience sub-freezing temperatures even down to town. We could even hit a record breaking low on Wednesday for this time of year. Pull out those puffies, get your faucets dripping, and be prepared for dangerous wind chills on the upper mountain. Northwest winds will be moderate to strong.
Unsettled weather associated with a jet of high wind aloft along the coast should bring some snow today. Optimistic point forecasts are indicating 2-6 in the next 24 hours. Realistically, I'd be surprised if we see much more than 3.
Snow showers will continue through Tuesday night, though the bulk of what is to come will come today and tonight. Clear, cold weather will continue for several days after.
