About 1-4 inches of new, light snow from Monday and Tuesday's showery storm can be found around the coverage area. Castle Lake has an inch. Mount Shasta has 4 inches in places. Up high, the new snow has done little to fill in the exposed rock. Start zones are mostly devoid of snow. Although northwest wind was blowing some snow up above 13,000 ft, not much wind-affect was seen down lower. New snow sits unbonded atop an uneven, hard snowpack.
The height of snow at the Old Ski Bowl is 61 inches. Four of this is new. Temperatures in the last 24 hours ranged from 5 to 21 ºF. Winds were light.
Remember, that before this storm, wind-felled tree debris was widespread below treeline. Above treeline, there was plenty of exposed ground and rock. Sleds, skis, and bones can be broken if riding hard on the new snow.
Mountain Weather:
Moderate to strong north winds aloft could create some windy conditions on the mountain today. The snow that is up there will be blowing around, but the skies will be clear. North winds often bring windy conditions all the way into town. Daytime highs will be in the 30s and lows in the teens to 20s. This will continue until Saturday night.
Then, the weather pattern will begin to change as a significant region of low pressure begins to break down that pesky high. We may see a bit of snow on Sunday. Monday looks wetter with up to 1/2 an inch of precipitable water in the air. Unfortunately snow levels will be high.
