Check out the 20 photos posted in the recent observations from Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl. No avalanches have been observed. Below treeline, it's a hot doggers' paradise. Get your groove on and avoid rocks, trees, dirt patches and more. So fun! Near treeline probably has the best snowpack, as it's higher in elevation and the wind hasn't blown it all away, like it has above treeline. South facing slopes at all elevation bands have really taken a hit, many melted out completely. It's a sight to behold...or not hold. Smooth snow surfaces for skiing and riding are hard to find. On the upper mountain, firm surfaces are conducive to a slide-for-life for climbers. Rockfall was observed yesterday, and two skiers turned around above Helen Lake because of it. Oh yes folks, sking and snowmobiling is possible in the Mount Shasta backcountry, but it's getting pretty darn western. If it was June, operations would be normal. But it's March!

Mountain Weather:
Increasing clouds throughout the day will signal the next system approaching the Pacific Northwest. Strong, gusty winds are expected over the weekend. This system will begin a change toward a more active pattern. The brunt of this first storm will be centered to the north of us. We will observe mostly windy conditions and a teaspoon of precipitation. Onset of said precip will begin late today and into tonight. We are staring down the barrel of .22 inches of water, which could mean a couple inches of fresh snow. Snow levels are near 4,900 feet today, 5,100 feet tonight and 3,800 feet tomorrow. The next system will arrive late Monday and bring a tablespoon of water, adding a few more inches of snow to the mountains, we hope. Just like the fellow human in need on the street corner, "God Bless, Anything Helps".
