Yesterday started out with mid and high level clouds in the area. Near treeline on Mount Shasta at about 1100 hours, a few flakes of snow fell from the sky. The flakes were so few, you could have counted them. Needless to say, there was no accumulation. Near the noon hour, the skies began to clear and by the afternoon, it was a very nice day with mild temperatures and calm wind. Snow surfaces were late to soften yesterday due to AM cloud cover. Avalanche Gulch has usable snow for climbers and skiers, though that snow will mostly be confined to the main gullies. Ridges and moraines are mostly devoid of snow until 10,000 ft. Expect plenty of patches of dirt as you ascend out of Bunny Flat and into 'The Gulch'. Please try to stay on the snow to limit damage to sensitive plants and soils.
The mountain is looking more like it does in late June on a normal year. Climbing conditions are decent, but climbers should be prepared for falling rock and firm conditions. Even though it looks like June, remember that it is still winter and backcountry users should be prepared for it. Crampons, an ice axe, and a helmet should be considered mandatory gear for summit attempts. Snow will still make access to east and north side trailheads difficult. Always check the weather before climbing.

Mountain Weather:
A trough over the Gulf of Alaska will send a cold front our way this weekend. Most areas will experience increasing cloud cover today at mid and upper elevations. Overall, expect another fairly mild day. The cold front will approach this evening and bring a chance of rain and snow by 2am. Widespread wetting rains are expected across the region, though the front will quickly move east of the Cascades Saturday afternoon. Accumulating snow will be restricted mostly to areas above 4,500 feet, varying from 1-6 inches. Snow levels will linger near 6,400 feet tonight and fall to 5,000 feet tomorrow. Temperatures on Saturday will be about 10-15 degrees cooler than today. Expect the storm to be wrapping up by Saturday evening. Sunday into next week, look for clearing skies with sunny and warm weather back in session. Highs will be in the 60s.
