Avalanches of any flavor are a thing of the past, and our observations have been mostly climbing related. Either that, or describing how dodgy the skiing and riding has been. Skiers will find moments of brilliance above treeline on Mount Shasta, but beware of rocks poking through the snowpack. Snowmobiling is still possible out of Bunny Flat, but we can't say it's worth driving from afar for.
Yesterday, the snow was moist and soft in the early afternoon, with smooth snow below 8,500 feet and more wind affected above. Clouds were building and by 1530 hours, the wind was picking up and getting colder. Skiers up high on the mountain reported "not bad" conditions above Helen Lake, but it likely didn't soften much. A few Timbersledders said Old Ski Bowl riding "wasn't bad".
Precipitation has yet to begin this morning, but we are expecting a tiche of snow today, so hopefully a little refresher. Many sunny slopes are completely melted out, so it's like starting over in those areas. A handful of climbers have been making summit attempts with success. Smooth and firm conditions with reported rockfall are the norm on the upper mountain. You'll encounter patches of dirt as you ascend out of Bunny Flat and into 'The Gulch'. Please try to stay on the snow to limit damage to sensitive plants and soils. All other trailheads are still behind miles of snow covered roads. We will update access information over the coming weeks as snow melts out. Check out the myriad of recent observations and pictures to get the best feel for the Shasta snow situation.
Mountain Weather:
A cold front moves though the area today, with rain and mountain snow. The storm is a little late to arrive, but none-the-less should bring some moisture to the area. Areas to the north, places like Crater Lake NP, will receive the most. That said, snow amounts will be modest in all areas of northern California and southern Oregon, and this spurt of weather will dry out Sunday. A warm front follows next week.
Precipitation has yet to begin this morning, but radar is showing rain moving onto the coast. The front will move onshore this morning and press east this afternoon. For today, expect temperatures to be 10-15 degrees cooler than yesterday. Wind will blow primarily out of the W-SW. Water amounts forecasted hover just over .3 inches with snow levels near 5,100 feet and lowering to town by this evening. We could see several inches out of this, or just an inch or so...these weak, westerly storms don't tend to be big producers. Crossing our fingers for the high end!
