Recent Observations:
The word of the day is temporal, relating to time: the spatial and temporal dimensions of human interference in complex ecosystems. Yesterday, after a 20-hour break in precipitation, yet another wave of wintry weather rolled in early in the day and brought a quick four to nine inches of new snow over a 12-hour period, above 6,000 feet. The snow level in the area hovered around 4,000 feet. The storm was accompanied by south/southeast wind averaging 14 mi/hr. Storm slabs below and near treeline saw a rapid spike in avalanche danger. Shallow slabs were easily ski cut off small test slopes during AM hours. Later in the afternoon, the snow already began to settle and storm slabs were unreactive. Wind slabs near and above treeline were still touchy. Red flags of avalanche danger were more subtle, but still out there. On the west face of Gray Butte near treeline, a few days old recent avalanche was observed.

Mountain Weather:
Wet and windy weather will continue throughout the forecast period. A consistent pattern has set up over the Pacific, with a large low spinning just southwest of the Aleutian Islands flinging system after system across the Pacific and into the West Coast. How each system affects Mount Shasta depends on the track and intensity of each individual storm. All said, frontal systems should be passing every one to two days. The next event to impact northern California is today, and will be mostly focused on the coast and Pacific Northwest. A diminishing trend in precipitation is expected this evening and overnight. We can still expect periods of precipitation locally with good upslope flow in the Mount Shasta region. A warm front moves on shore today. Snow levels will linger near 4,000 feet today, 5,200 feet tonight and 6,300 feet Thursday. Wind will be significant, all blowing out of the south/southwest. Longer term, we will find our forecast area under the influences of an atmospheric river, with a Pacific moisture plum pushing plenty of precipitation into NorCal. Snow levels should remain above 5,000 feet.
