Recent Observations:
Not much has changed on Mount Shasta in the last few days. Snow depths above treeline are holding despite above freezing temperatures. There's about 20 inches near treeline. Northwest winds kicked up last night to moderate levels, peaking at 24 mi/hr and gusting up to 49.
The only usable snow in the forecast area is above treeline on Mount Shasta. Expect about a 1/2 mile walk up from Bunny Flat to find continuous snow. Surfaces remain mostly smooth, though wind textured snow will be encountered in areas above treeline. Numerous obstacles exist. Be prepared for firm conditions.
Mountain Weather:
A strong southeasterly flow aloft is pushing colder air into the area. We should see below freezing temperatures by late this afternoon. A small amount of precipitation will accompany the incoming cold front, but don't expect any snow accumulation to speak of.
A progressive weather pattern begins Saturday and should last into next week. By Monday morning, 1.9 inches of precipitable water will pass through and snow levels will be near town. Models are indicating a 60% chance that Mount Shasta City will receive over 24 inches of snow over a 72 hour period. Now we're talking!
