Forecast Addendum - 12/10/2021 - 07:00am

Submitted by nmeyers on Fri, 12/10/2021 - 6:10am
Recent Observations:

A venture into Wagon Bowl in the Eddy Mountains yesterday revealed a very thin and sparse snowpack on the cold and windy day. Snow depths ranged from 0 to a couple inches and patchy. A skiff of new snow, hardly measurable, was on the ground. Trees above 6,500 feet remained frosted all day long. A dead snag threatened the Mt. Eddy weather station, so we worked to mitigate that hazard with success.

Crisis averted! With ripe new telemetry at all our weather stations, we fell this snag that would have likely blown over at some point and potentially wiped out the Eddy station.

No avalanches have been observed this season. The only usable snowpack in the forecast area is above treeline on Mount Shasta. Most ridgelines and southerly aspects are melted out below 8,500 feet. Snow depths elsewhere are holding steady with about 10-20 inches of snow near treeline. Exposed talus, boulders, trees and stumps dominate near and below treeline terrain.

Snow surfaces remain smooth-ish. Winter recreation in the Castle Lake area, Eddy Mountains and east of Mount Shasta is not possible, yet!

Mountain Weather:

You can cut the tension with a knife, folks. Weather models depict a bombastic storm twisting its way toward the Pacific coast this weekend, set to make landfall on Saturday. Sliders and riders alike will have to control anxious twitches through one more day of clear and cold weather before the storm begins to snarl. Hurricane force winds above treeline will signal the storm entering the chat. Precipitation will begin around 1300 hours on Saturday. Approximately .45 inches of water is forecast for the day, which could mean 3-6 inches of snow by bedtime. And this, my friends, is just the beginning. The 6-day total for precipitation near Bunny Flat is 7-8 inches of water. With cold temps in the house, well...that is a lot of snow, like feet and feet. Snow levels will hover near town. It is officially time to batten the hatches, party people. Put away your patio furniture and clean up your yard mess because otherwise, it's going to get covered in snow. For today, partly cloudy to mostly sunny, cold and windy in the hills.
