Recent Observations:
Take a close look at the current snowpack situation on Mt. Shasta. Above treeline where snow remains are the best areas for new avalanche problems this weekend. Snow surfaces are smooth and firm.

Prior to today's storm onset, the only usable snowpack in the forecast area is above treeline on Mount Shasta. Snow depths have been holding steady with about 10-20 inches of snow near treeline at the Old Ski Bowl weather station. Most ridgelines and southerly aspects are melted out below 8,500 feet. These areas will begin to build a winter snowpack. Exposed talus, boulders, trees and stumps dominate near and below treeline terrain. The snowpack in the Castle Lake area, Eddy Mountains and east of Mount Shasta is close to none, and will just begin to build a base this weekend also.
Mountain Weather:
It's time to stop the talking and start the walking. A series of wet and cold low pressure systems will move across Northern California Saturday through Tuesday, resulting in heavy snowfall and significant travel problems. A winter storm warning has been issued by the NWS and is in effect from 1pm this afternoon to 10pm PST Monday. Hurricane force winds above treeline are expected through Sunday night out of the south/southwest. Precipitation forecasts on Mt. Shasta predict 8-9 inches of water over the next 6 days. Snow levels will fluctuate between 3 and 4,000 feet. By next week, feet of snow should be on the ground. Temperatures will remain cool, with highs in the mid to high twenties. Hang on to your hat, folks. "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore"!
