Recent Observations:
If you were able to make it near and above treeline yesterday on Mount Shasta you would have experienced calm to light west to northwest winds, temperatures in the low twenties and below, and deep low density (fist hard) snow. The snow depth at the Old Ski Bowl is 45 inches (114 cm).
Castle Lake and the Eddies have 25 to 30 inches of snow. Ash Creek is reporting 37 inches.
On a short foray above Bunny Flat yesterday, we found 25-33 inches (65-85 cm) of new snow. Boot penetration was almost down to the dirt, on which most new snow exists. Ski penetration was 8-12 inches (20-30 cm).
Above treeline, where an old snow pack existed before the last storm, you'll find more wind affected areas. Some westerly facing ridges were scoured down to the old snow. Sastrugis indicated that winds blew from the west and south since Saturday afternoon. Small wind drifts and cornices were not reactive to ski trigger. No concerning instabilities were found in the snowpack. No obvious signs of avalanche danger were encountered.
Above treeline, many rocks are visible on sun exposed slopes. Below treeline, the snowpack was supportive enough to keep you above most lurking obstacles beneath. Deep turns are still not recommended.
Mountain Weather:
A warm front is moving in from the west bringing wetter air. But don't expect warm temperatures. Snow levels will remain below or near town. A winter storm warning is in effect until 10 p.m.
Moderate south winds to hurricane force west winds will blast the mountain as elevation increases. Expect 6-13 inches of snow below treeline and up to 18 above. Wind will chill you to the bone.
After 10 p.m. snow showers will continue but the brunt of the storm will be over. A couple more inches could fall by 10 a.m. tomorrow. Drier air will give a break to the action until Sunday when a progressive weather pattern should bring more precipitation throughout next week.
