The results are in (Height of New Snow - HS24 / Total Height of Snow - HS):
- Old Ski Bowl: 22 / 68 in
- Castle Lake / Eddies: 15 / 40 in
- Ash Creek Butte: 6 / 42 in
Mount Shasta City had near 13 inches of new snow by 5 p.m. yesterday. Dunsmuir seemed to have more.
Southwest winds on Gray Butte were light to moderate, gusting up to 50 mi/hr. Temperatures remained below 20 ºF throughout the storm.
Low density snow exists throughout the new snow since Saturday afternoon. The snowpack is right side up, ranging from 4F to F hardness from the ground to the surface. You'll sink near to the dirt if you take off your skis.
Signs of storm slab instabilities were evident in the Eddies and wind drifts were up to 7 feet deep. Because of the density of the snow and the fact that no snow existed prior to Saturday afternoon, you may want to hold off on deep carves. Don't go breaking those brand new sleds and skis, or your young or old knees.
Mountain Weather:
A low pressure trough is passing through and may squeeze a bit more precipitation out of the air, but don't expect much. The storm is over. Winds will shift from south to north as high pressure begins to dominate. Winds above treeline will be moderate with strong gusts. Temperatures will remain below freezing at most elevations.
Cloud levels will start near 5,000 ft, but after 10 a.m. the weather will become drier and clearer until early Sunday morning when strong low pressure returns that southerly flow that brings the best snow. Looks like we'll get daily doses of snow thereafter at the elevations we like.
