Recent Observations:
Overall, the snowpack is stable and right side up. Some evidence of a weak, sugary layer has been found where old snow existed before 12/11, but it does not seem to be widespread or consistent. Medium failures were seen on this layer out at Ash Creek Butte yesterday, but with no propagation. Blowing snow was observed, but no wind slabs were forming. No other signs of instability or avalanches were seen.
Snow surfaces are variable - low density, chalky, wind textured and hardened, thin sun crusts. Shady and north facing areas hold the best snow for sliding and riding.
Pilgrim Creek and Deer Mountain Snowmobile Parks are open. Road 19 has thin, icy snow until the first fork. After that, there's plenty of usable snow. No obstructions along the trails were encountered out to Ash Creek Butte. The snowpack out there is still thin, and you'll be tempted to get your snowmobile on edge, but we'd advise against it. There are numerous obstacles lurking beneath the surface.
There has been no definitive word on Castle Lake Road.
Mountain Weather:
When it comes to atmospheric pressure, "high" has become a four letter word 'round these parts. It tends to bring clear, dry weather. Well say "hello" to low pressure. It's going to be a welcome guest visiting over the holidays - maybe even until New Year's. With it, expect a daily dose of snow and a southerly flow, which means forecasted precipitation numbers are likely to materialize.
Today and tonight's dose could bring 4 inches at higher elevations. Snow levels will be 3700 - 4000 ft. Snow will mostly fall late in the afternoon and night. Southerly winds will be moderate to strong and may even reach hurricane force above treeline.
