Recent Observations:
The buried graupel layer that dominated our observations the last week is gone and has been replaced with a consolodated, stable snowpack. There are still some areas of soft snow, but winds above treeline have created variable crusts that are easily found on all aspects and can make for tricky travel conditions. Below treeline, particularly in areas sheltered from the sun it's still possible to find pockets of loose, unconsolidated snow for the recreation-mode of your choice. Yesterday, during an exploration of the trails near Ash Creek Butte, our forecasters found no signs of slab formation or wind-affect below treeline. Visibility was poor with snow flurries on the east side accompanying gray skies and flat lighting. The trails and grooming are in excellent condition for riding, with excellent coverage found everywhere throughout the day.
Mountain Weather:
Strong winds are expected on the upper portion of the mountain in the next few days, particularly tomorrow. The precipitation forecasted to accompany the wind is for now only a small amount, somewhere in the range of 1-2 inches of new snow. With the high winds above treeline, any accumulation will likely be wind-scoured and won't have much of an impact on recreation. The winds, however, may be a different story with gusts predicted to reach up to 75 mph tonight and 45 mph during the day tomorrow. If you're traveling up high, don't get blown away!
