Recent Observations:
The wind and warmer weather will continue to reshape the snow surface, and conditions are becoming more variable. Consistent, soft, cold snow still exists only in the deepest, darkest hollers or wind sheltered, high elevation, northerly slopes. Southerly and westerly slopes keep getting more scoured and sun crusted. East aspects hold a mix of soft snow and breakable crusts. Below the snow surface, the snowpack is consolidated and strong.
- Yesterday (Winter Solstice and first day of winter), a low cloud and fog layer lingered for most of the day, ~6,000-7,000 feet. In town was dreary. On Mount Shasta, the sky was clear with strong, gusty northwesterly wind.
- Over the past 24 hours:
- Temperatures averaged 32° F, with a low of 27° and high of 37° near treeline
- Wind averaged 12 mi/hr with gusts to 49 mi/hr out of the west/northwest
- Precipitation/new snow over the past week - nil
Mountain Weather:
A piddly front will begin to spread precipitation and strong westerly wind over the area today. Snow levels will hover near 5,900 feet. Rain and snow is expected to begin early afternoon, and peak late in the afternoon/evening. We will see 2-4 inches of new snow on the mountain over the next 24 hours. Impacts from this precipitation will be no more than a nuisance at lower elevations and perhaps a slight refresh to the snowpack near and above treeline. A gradual warming and drying trend will follow into the weekend. Late Saturday, Christmas Eve, just a titch of precipitation is forecast with snow levels bumping up to 8,100 feet! Much more active weather is on tap for the last few days of December and into the new year.
