Recent Observations:
Yesterday was a dreary one. The daily duty brought me to the Castle Lake weather station. We continue to work on troubleshooting the snow depth sensor. Current measurement at the site is 48 inches.
The warm, nuisance storm arrived on time and light rain began around 1200 to 1300 hours. Snow levels were 8,000 feet or higher. Little to no snow accumulation was observed. Rain on snow dominated, except for the upper ramparts of Mount Shasta, which probably received a skiff of new snow. Water equivalent measured .24 inches. Over the past 24 hours, wind out of the W-NW averaged 12 mi/hr with gusts to 37 mi/hr. Temperatures dropped to 29° F and maxed out at 35° F at treeline on the mountain. As for the snowpack, it's a mess. Rain on snow, heavy wind affect, crusts, wet mashed potatoes...if you can still find consistent, good powder snow...give yourself a pat on the back. No signs of avalanche danger have been observed aside from a few loose, wet roller balls at lower elevations. Observations are absent from upper elevation, colder, windier locales.
Mountain Weather:
Strong wind is expected on the upper mountain today. Showers will taper off through the day, and a period of drier weather will follow tonight into early Saturday. Another weak, warm front is expected late Saturday. Precipitation amounts will be very light. Snow levels are agonizingly high, rising to 8,100 feet by tomorrow. Temperatures, as you have gleaned, are warm and closer to the average in early April than late December. Christmas Day is shaping up to be mostly dry and clear. Sunday night through next Friday, an active, wet pattern is in store and confidence is high that it will produce. As for strength, track and timing, more on that as the New Year draws near.
