Recent Observations:
In the last week, Mount Shasta has received over 18 inches of snow (1.43 SWE). In the last 24 hours, Mount Shasta received several inches, though the weather station at the Old Ski Bowl is reporting spurious numbers. Castle Lake received 5 inches, and Mount Eddy 10. Winds have been westerly, averaging 20 mi/hr and gusting up to 61. The mean temperature was 21 ºF.
Yesterday below treeline, winds were calm to light and little wind effect was seen. No notable instabilities were found. Ski cuts on steep, short, unsupported slopes produced some small sloughs but nothing of concern.
As one transitioned to above treeline, the effects of wind became evident. Moderate, westerly winds were building overhanging cornices on easterly aspects which were breakable upon approach. Blocking and shooting cracks were seen in these areas. Extended column tests failed upon isolation. Wind loaded slopes were touchy. These conditions were found on Gray Butte and Green Butte Ridge.
Mountain Weather:
A winter storm advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. this morning. Those driving back to work should be prepared for icy, snowy roads.
The storm is breaking and a few inches of snow may fall before 10 a.m. but don't expect much after. West and northwest winds will be light below treeline and moderate to strong above. Temperatures will be in the teens and wind chills will be bitter.
Arctic air aloft will continue to flow from the far north keeping things cold over the next week. Looks like we'll have a lull in inclement weather but more may be on the way next week.
