Recent Observations:
Yesterday, forecasters found more benign conditions than expected from the first of two weather systems (the second of which we're experiencing today). Most of yesterday's forecasted precipitation didn't make it past the coast. Moderate winds with occassional strong gusts were encountered in exposed terrain and along ridges near Casaval Ridge. Conditions near treeline in Avalanche Gulch were quite pleasant with good, supportable skiing being easily found; we had only light winds with occassional moderate gusts. Below treeline, the snow was wet and heavy, making for sticky skiing. A quick hand pit of the upper 25 inches of snowpack found moist snow and variable-size rounded grains.
The freezing level remained quite high yesterday but began to drop last night into today. This will likely result in the initially new snow bonding well to the existing snowpack. Some uncertainty exists as to how well the new snow will stick to the variable crusts near and above treeline. As you enjoy the new snow the next few days, consider submitting a brief observation to the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center. Even 1-2 sentences go a long way.
Mountain Weather:
There is a HIGH WIND WARNING for exposed areas, with more sheltered areas having a HIGH WIND ADVISORY, until 4:00pm this afternoon (find the difference between a watch, advisory, and warning here). A strong low pressure system off the coast of Washington state is helping drive today's stormy weather. An associated atmospheric river that came onshore last night is bringing the heavy rain, snow, and strong winds. As of 5:00am this morning, the Old Ski Bowl and Gray Butte weather stations report strong winds and over 12 inches of new snow since 7:00pm yesterday. The new snow and wind is expected to remain while the low pressure system moves east. Heavy rain and snow will continue until early this afternoon when it begins to taper off. Tomorrow is forecasted to be windy with only a 30% chance of precipitation.
