Recent Observations:
The Old Ski Bowl is reporting 81.6 inches of snow. Much of this is light and low density. Boot penetration is up to your thighs in places. Conditions yesterday felt deep in all zones. Temperatures barely breached 15 ºF. Ash Creek reported single digits all day and night. West and northwest winds on Gray Butte were moderate to strong in the morning, with gusts up to 55 mi/hr. They became southerly and light in the afternoon, though lenticulars seen from a distance indicate the winds remained strong at high elevations.
Cornices and steep leewards were touchy yesterday. Cornices broke upon approach. Easterly slopes above treeline were being loaded, though there were no reports of significant, unstable wind slabs being found. No notable signs of avalanches were seen.
An odd wind feature formed under the snow depth sensor at the Old Ski Bowl causing it to report erroneous results. Numbers registered after 1 p.m. are the correct ones.
Mountain Weather:
Low pressure will continue to move a bit of precipitation into the area today. Most of this looks to come this morning, after which expect showery conditions. We could get up to 3 inches of snow by tomorrow. Snow levels will be below town. Mostly cloudy conditions will exist at elevations below 10,000 ft.
A northerly flow will keep temperatures in the teens and low twenties until at least Thursday morning. Wind chills will be well below zero.
Above treeline, west and northwest winds will continue to be moderate to strong. Below treeline, winds are becoming southerly and light.
Not much precipitation is expected the rest of the week, though next week a westerly flow may bring significant snow to the area.
