Recent Observations:
The height of snow at the Old Ski Bowl is 79 inches. Though weather stations are reporting no new snow in the last 24 hours, we definitely received around 3 inches yesterday morning, and possibly a bit more last night. Snowflakes, like the paper ones you made in grade school, fell from the sky and the new snow was as blower as these parts will see. The mean temperature was 15.5 ºF, the low 10, and the high 25. Winds were light and from the west. At Castle Lake, winds were more southerly. Snow depth there measured 73 inches near the bottom of Left Peak.
A widespread ice lens formed by freezing fog was reported from several locations yesterday including the Eddies, the Mount Shasta Ski Park, and Gray Butte. This was not seen at Castle Lake at 3 p.m. Unfortunately this crust capped a lot of the low density snow out there making sliding enthusiasts whimper.
A couple of small (D1), isolated avalanches have been seen, but very little evidence of instabilities have been witnessed aside from sensitive cornices. Generally the snowpack is right side up. Visibility and winds have kept most observers away from above treeline elevations. Westerly winds were blowing plenty of snow on the upper mountain Monday and moraines and ridge tops were becoming scoured and snow surfaces wind-hardened.
Mountain Weather:
Today, expect some early snow, then snow showers with little accumulation. Skies should begin clearing by mid-day, though low level clouds may linger. Temperatures will remain in the 20s. South winds will be light below treeline. As you transition above treeline, winds will become moderate to strong and from the west.
No precipitation is expected until Sunday.
