Recent Observations:
- The December 26/27 storm brought 8–14 inches of dense snow that is well pasted to existing snow surfaces
- Little concern remains for existing weak layers. The snowpack is set up well for a fresh load of snow
- In the last 24 hours:
- Temperatures have ranged from 16 to 26 deg F with strong wind out of the NW switching to SW
- Blowing snow and strong winds have been observed near and above treeline. Visibility was mostly clear in the morning and poor in the afternoon
- 5 inches new snow at treeline on Mt Shasta this morning. Total height of snow - 65 inches
Mountain Weather:
An active pattern of weather will play out over the next few days. Heavy snow, wind and ample precipitation is certain. A winter weather advisory, issued by the NWS, is in effect until 10pm this evening. The first wave will do its thing this morning, tapering off by 10am. The second, more robust wave will begin later today around 1600 hours. Snow levels will linger near 4,000 feet today, rising to 5,000 feet tonight. With about an inch of water expected to fall over the next 24 hours, we could see a foot of new snow on the mountain by tomorrow morning. Strong southwesterly wind will blow 30+ mi/hr over exposed terrain. The next system will approach the region around Monday.
