Recent Observations:
Locals and forecasters alike have been stepping out into more terrain lately. No signs of avalanche danger have been observed/reported. Yesterday brought a wintry mix of cold temps, sun, fog, clouds, wind and even a few snow showers around the forecast area. Little to no accumulation was observed. The freezing fog crust dominates the snowpack and varies in thickness and location. In general, it is non-supportable and thicker at lower elevations. Only the coldest and most protected areas hold crust-less snow. The north wind at upper elevations has been prominent. Daytime high's have been below freezing. Despite less than perfect snow quality, winter is firing on all cylinders around here, and we are very happy about it!
Mountain Weather:
We should see partly cloudy to mostly clear skies for the next couple of days. The north wind is comfortably in place and will blow into Saturday. Extreme wind chill on Mt. Shasta is certain. Any recreation efforts above treeline should be well-intentioned. Be prepared. Longer term, precipitation is back on tap, tracking to impact this area by Sunday night. Upwards of 2.57 inches of water is forecasted Sunday night through Tuesday. More on that as the time draws near, and we will see you next year!
