Recent Observations:
The most notable observations from Gray Butte yesterday were the variety in surface conditions created by the previous winds and warm temperatures. These surfaces include wind-scoured snow, melt-freeze crust, ice glaze, and soft snow. All of which can be found near and above treeline. The recent balmy days, stable weather conditions, and lack of precipitation have allowed the snowpack to settle largely. A lack of overnight freezing temperatures has created slushy and wet snow on the majority of aspects below treeline.

Mountain Weather:
A winter weather advisory is in place for the Mount Shasta region until late Wednesday night. An impactful low-pressure weather system descending from the northwest is on our doorstep. This cold front will create periods of heavy snowfall and well below-freezing temperatures with negative wind chill values. Radically strong high-elevation winds are expected with the passing of this front. In the last 24 hours mountain temperatures have remained above freezing levels with an average of 42° F. Winds blowing from the northwest have increased averaging 16 mph with a max gust of 92 mph. As of 5 am, no new snow has been recorded.
