Recent Observations:
Yesterday saw continuing cold winds out of the north northwest, continuing the scouring of ridgelines and any exposed areas, particularly above treeline. 3-4 inches of light, low-density snow fell at Bunny Flat, becoming a bit deeper higher up the mountain. Near and above treeline remained scoured, icy surfaces, with most of the new snow ending up on the leeward side of ridelines and filling up the bowls. At and below treeline the collected snow was piled up anywhere between 4 - 10 inches. The low density of the snow made it easy to find the firm crust underneath, though with all the new snow on the way, it likely won't be that way for long.
Mountain Weather:
The low will move south into northern California this evening and night at which point the focus for moderate to heavy snow will be in northern California, specifically around the Mount Shasta Area, and eastward through southeast Siskiyou County. Lift and upslope flow will develop from about Weed south to the Mount Shasta Area, including Mount Shasta City, the Mount Shasta ski area, and areas northeast of Mount Shasta towards Tennant and Medicine Lake. Winds today will shift from coming out of the north to coming out of the south. When southern flows start to hit Mount Shasta, that generally means it's "game on" for piling up snow, and this storm is no exception. Expect moderate to heavy snow in these areas with snowfall rates pushing into the 1 to 2 inch per hour range along highway 89 between Mount Shasta City and McCloud tonight. That's what we like to call some "high precipitation intensity." A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Mount Shasta area.
