Recent Observations:
Yesterday brought us out onto the east side of Mount Shasta for a snowmobile tour with the fine folks from the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Department. Temperatures were very chilly, reaching a high of 10° F. Nearly constant, low density snow fell throughout the day. Near Ash Creek Butte in the late afternoon, 6–10 inches of new snow was measured on top of the hard, crusty, old snow surface. The storm began in earnest once the weather flow swung to the south, mid-morning. Early this morning, we couldn't believe our eyes when we looked at the Old Ski Bowl snow depth...over the past 24 hours, three feet of snow has fallen near treeline on Mount Shasta. Wind has blown primarily out of the southwest, south and southeast, averaging 12 mi/hr with gusts to 49 mi/hr. Red flags of avalanche danger were flying high yesterday and will continue that trend today...recent heavy snow, wind blowing snow, shooting cracks and whumpfing. Visibility has been very difficult, and we stuck to low angle terrain, so we didn't observe any recent avalanches.
Mountain Weather:
Winter is back in session. An unusually cold and slow-moving winter storm has brought heavy snowfall and strong wind to California and adjacent areas of the West. California in particular has been the dominant focus for the greatest storm impacts. The prolonged storm is gradually winding down today, but expect lingering showers into the AM hours. Gusty winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow. Snow levels are very low, and in fact near the Pacific Coast in some areas! Snowfall, in the mountains of our forecast area, should accumulate to as much as 2–4 feet. Another system will arrive late Saturday night into Sunday, bringing with it another round of Pacific moisture. Another 1–2 feet is possible by Monday morning.
