Recent Observations:
Abundant snow near and below treeline with moderate to strong winds loading snow onto easterly aspects was the main takeaway from a tour up Gray Butte yesterday. Reports from the Eddy mountains confirmed active wind loading near and below treeline onto easterly and southerly aspects, with reactive drifts near ridgelines and in steep terrain. Below treeline the distribution of wind drifted snow was specific to small wind-exposed areas which displayed wind textured snow and cracking. Evidence of storm slabs was not encountered. Below treeline settlement rings around tree trunks were common. Fluctuating weather, with periods of heavy snow to slightly sunny skies, was experienced near treeline.

Mountain Weather:
Today we should finally have a chance to catch our breath from all these low-elevation snow events. Precipitation and clouds will linger in the hills early this morning, then give way to a gradual clearing of skies. The sun will make an appearance with freezing levels rising to 3,000 feet. Winds have shifted to a northerly flow and will stay the primary wind direction through today and into Thursday. Over the last 24 hours, the Old Ski Bowl weather station has picked up 5 inches of new snow. The Gray Butte weather station is reading an average temperature of 10° F with winds blowing from the west-southwest averaging a speed of 13 mph with a max gust of 73 mph.
