Recent Observations:
With all the recent snow and high winds, we expected to find evidence of instability, particularly on the upper mountain. We found evidence of wind-loading on S-SE aspects, though without any of the accompanying red flags (cracking, collapsing, whumphing) that one would expect given recent conditions. At treeline and slightly below, we found wind-sculpted snow, with plenty more loose snow being transported during our time spent higher up on the mountain yesterday.
We did manage to top out Gray Butte during a period of clearing, giving us excellent views of the south and southeast sides of Mount Shasta. Particularly Casaval Ridge and the Old Ski Bowl. We were expecting (hoping?) to see crowns of naturally occuring avalanches, particularly on the higher mountain. Though the mountain was glorious as always, recent avalanches were nowhere to be seen.
Mountain Weather:
Looks like we've got a break in the weather for a few days but, stop me if you've heard this one, Saturday will bring another period of low-elevation snow with snow levels down around 500 feet on Saturday morning. The town of Mount Shasta could see another foot of snow on Saturday starting in the morning, with more precipitation in the evening through Sunday morning. We'll likely see more flurries throughtout the day on Sunday and on into Monday.
Weather models are in slight disagreement about what happens next week, though the consensus seems to be that we are in for below average temps and above average precipitation, at least through this weekend if not longer. We'll have a clearer view of next week as this weekend's storm starts to take shape.
