Recent Observations:
Yesterday, a trip over to the east side by Ash Creek Butte found more fresh snow than expected, about 6 inches. This was all sitting on top of a slight crust, which itself is atop about 15-18 inches of unconsolidated snow. This layering was consistent throughout the entire area we surveyed. We saw less signs of recent avalanche activity than we've been spotting off Gray Butte and up at Castle Lake the last week or so. We did have much less visibility, so it's certainly not a definitive finding. However, it does appear that the east side may not have seen the same levels of rain activity that hit Castle Lake a little over a week ago. With more snow and increasing winds in the forecast, be aware that there is a fair amount of light snow available for transport on the east side of the mountain.
Mountain Weather:
We're currently looking at cooling temperatures and a return of some more snow flurries, at least at Bunny Flat and above. Snow levels look like they'll be around 5,000 feet during the day today, and lowering down to the valley floor this evening through tonight. With this new weather system comes some WIND! The past 24 hours saw our Gray Butte Weather Station top out at about 30 mph gusts. Over the next 24 hours that could easily push 70 mph, if the forecast holds true through today and tomorrow. With temperatures dropping, expect the arriving precipitation to be of the lighter variety, which will mean even more wind transport of the falling snow. A slight break from the weather on Sunday looks like a bit of a false reprieve, with another front moving into our area starting on Sunday night or Monday. We're in a bit of a wait and see with regards to how much moisture that system will bring with it to deliver as snow. Fingers crossed! (either way, depending on how you're feeling about all the snow at this time)
