Recent Observations:
March 24th brought us into the Eddy Mountains for snow survey at Deadfall Lakes and the North Fork of the Sacramento courses. Average snow depths measured 111 inches with ~40% water content. The day brought obscured sky, light snowfall, a stout west wind and chilly temperatures. The most notable avalanche problem was touchy, easily triggered cornices and wind slabs along ridges exposed to the wind, near and above treeline. Below treeline, unstable snow was not observed. We are still seeing a lot of spatial variability in new snow depths, and wind effects within the forecast area. New snow measures anywhere from a couple inches, up to 10 inches. Wind loaded areas may host slabs up to a foot or more. North facing cornices loom on most ridges, indicative of the incessant south flow we've experienced this winter. A few crusts linger in the top layers of the snowpack, with soft snow in between. This setup isn't much of a problem now, but could be with a large loading event like the storm arriving Monday evening.
In the past 24 hours, temperatures have ranged from 5° to 24° F. Predominant wind direction is out of the NW, averaging 21 mi/hr with max gusts to 61 mi/hr. New snow totals are near 1 inch. There are 190 inches of settled snow at treeline on Mount Shasta, 147 at our Mt Eddy weather station, 160 inches at Castle Lake and 174 inches out near Ash Creek Butte.
Mountain Weather:
More snow shower activity today, with unseasonably cold temperatures and windy conditions above treeline. Precipitation will decrease in coverage and intensity tonight into Sunday. For next week, a winter storm watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. This relatively strong low pressure will bring strong, moist, southerly flow into northern California. The storm should arrive on Monday afternoon or evening. Gusty wind will also be part of the program.
