Recent Observations:
Yesterday, observation from gray Butte revealed 16 – 20 plus inches of new storm snow. Small cracking on isolated slopes with a couple small whoopfs were observed. Over a foot of ski penetration was felt, with obvious snow settlement on lower angle slopes. On isolated steep convex terrain features, small sensitive storm slabs were easy to release and ran decent ways. Patches of sky were witnessed during breaks in the storm yesterday, all of which were short-lived. Snow showers tapped off late last night, before gradually restarting early this morning.
Cracking within the upper layer of storm snow
Mountain Weather:
Over the past 24 hours, the mountains have received 20 plus inches of new snow with the largest amounts on Mount Shasta. Winds have been blowing from a south and southeast direction averaging 12 mph with a max gust of 42 mph. Temperatures have remained in the high teens to low twenties. The large upper level low continues to spiral offshore this morning, slowly drifting to the southeast towards the central California coast. The resulting southerly flow will be less enhanced than that of yesterday’s storm, pushing more shower activity into the area. Weak ridging builds over the region Thursday with a northwest flow looking to keep showers ongoing through Thursday night into Friday. A winter storm watch remains in effect through late this morning.
