Recent Observations:
Findings from yesterday’s observation on Gray Butte reveled lower elevation south and east aspects quickest to heat up and become unstable. Wet-loose slides were easiest to initiate near rock outcroppings and on slopes steeper than 30 degrees displaying penetrable depths greater than 10 cm (5 in). Past wet-loose activity was abundant below south and east ridgelines with paths running hundreds of feet with large debris piles. No natural wet-loose activity was observed during the hours of 1000 to 1300. Cornices continue to dominate north and east ridgelines. Surface snow near ridge tops on northerly aspects did not re-warm due to wind chill, while northerly mid-slope faces presented some softening in exposed areas. A strong northwest wind aloft was observed blowing snow off the summit of Mount Shasta for the duration of my tour. No recent wet-loose activity was spotted above treeline on Mount Shasta.

Mountain Weather:
Today will remain dry with temperatures at 8,000 feet resting near freezing levels with the potential to creep higher. Mostly clear skies with a light to moderate westerly wind shifting to a northerly direction by the day's end is expected.
An upper level trough swinging over-head is causing shower activity across much of the western and northern Cascades. The Mount Shasta region remains south of the activity and will not receive as inclement of weather compared to our Oregon neighbors. Cold temperatures associated with this front will continue to seep into the region from the north with freezing levels dropping most significantly Thursday morning. Ridging will build over head Thursday, leading into a dry and warming trend through Saturday.
