Recent Observations:
Well it certainly seemed as if spring conditions were here to stay. Yesterday we saw a warming snowpack with collapsing/sagging cornices, sun crusts, you name it. However, it looks as if the upper mountain may not have gotten the memo. Winter conditions are still largely in effect at the upper reaches of the mountain. Avalanche debris was spotted over in the Old Ski Bowl, evidence of recent warming trends. In addition, a sizable slide was photographed just above Hidden Valley. Sadly we weren't able to get boots on the ground near it just yet but, you can see from the posted photo, it was a significant slide that could easily result in a buried human. It's a good reminder that just because conditions feel mellow in town, the mountain may have other ideas. With a winter like we've seen, and the snowpack we've got on Mount Shasta, the spring time is no time to become complacent when it comes to safe travel practices in the backcountry.

Mountain Weather:
Remember how it looked like spring was here to stay? Just kidding everyone! Winter is back, at least for tonight. Gusty winds are expected along the coast, which will translate into notable winds up on Mount Shasta and in the surrounding area. Those same winds are set to blow in a decent amount of precipitation, with over a foot of new snow predicted up at Bunny Flat tonight and tomorrow. The Shasta Valley will have moderate to occasionally strong winds, especially near Weed from late this morning into this afternoon, and a wind advisory remains in effect. Once the upper trough moves into the area tonight, precipitation will spread inland. Freezing levels tonight are around 5,000 feet, so expect significantly different conditions in town vs on the mountain. And, just as quickly as this one is moving in, it's expected to keep on moving. Unlike for most of this winter, it doesn't appear that this storm will continue to linger. Expect things to clear up over the weekend and be replaced by calmer weather.
