Recent Observations:
Yesterday witnessed gradually increasing clouds throughout the day. Precipitation began late in the afternoon. Overnight, five to eight inches of new, wet snow has fallen in the high country. Snow levels have been above ~4,500 feet. Wind has blow primarily out of the south/southeast, averaging 9 mi/hr with gusts to 30 mi/hr. Temps have ranged from 23° to 26° F. New snow has fallen on a variety of snow surfaces. Recent signs of avalanche danger have been nil below and near treeline. Observations above treeline on Mount Shasta have been limited, though a few glimpses of rather large slab avalanches have been observed a few days ago. This was a result of a period of incessant west/northwest wind.
Mountain Weather:
A little of this, a little of that, seems to be the weather pattern lately. A short-lived storm will gradually diminish this afternoon, with dry weather to follow. Snow levels today are near 5,600 feet. A warm front will move towards the area Saturday. Southwest flow will trend Sunday. Next week, cooler and unsettled weather is likely, drying out by week's end.
