Recent Observations:
In the last 24 hours on Mount Shasta, we've received about 15 inches of new snow. Since Saturday afternoon, around 34 inches have fallen. Above treeline, westerly winds have been moderate to strong, gusting up to 55 mph. Mean temperatures have been 20ºF, ranging from 12 to 24 degrees.
Castle Lake and the Eddies have received around 30 inches of snow.
A tour from Mount Shasta Ski Park up to the base of Gray Butte yesterday confirmed the numbers the weather stations are reporting. At the time, the height of snow was 25-30 inches (65-75 cm). Snow was falling at a rate of over 1 in/hr (2.5 cm/hr). Visibility was low. We were not able to get high enough to observe wind affect or areas where old snow exists. The new snow was low density, fist hard down to the dirt. Shovel tilt and column tests indicated easy failures on a slight density change 14 inches (35 cm) down. This could be indicative of a storm slab problem on steep slopes.
Snow depths at the Mount Shasta Ski Park were in the neighborhood of 20-24 inches. Cats were running and packing it in. They are on target for a Friday opening.
Everitt Memorial Highway (EMH) and Castle Lake Roads were closed yesterday. We are hopeful that at least EMH will open today. We plan on checking first thing this morning and will send out an update on social media.
Mountain Weather:
Colder, drier air is moving in today. Expect some lingering snow showers, but overall clearing skies and light to moderate westerly winds. Look out for black ice on roads.
A warm front will push moister air in tomorrow and we could see 7-20 inches of snow from below treeline to above treeline regions. Snow levels will remain near town throughout.
After, we should see a break in the action until Sunday. Next week will bring more inclement weather.
