Recent Observations:
Christmas was a pretty quiet day of weather, with mixed clouds and some blue sky. Westerly wind continues to crank, blowing steadily over much of the weekend. Active wind loading has been observed on many easterly aspects near and above treeline. The wind on Mt. Shasta can be funky, some areas have been getting hammered, others not so much.
Several red flags of avalanche danger were observed yesterday including wind blowing snow, fragile cornices and cracking/blocking along ridgelines. Moderate to strong west wind (~20 mi/hr) was efficiently transporting new snow and loading easterly slopes. Gray Butte weather station continues to report average wind speeds of ~20 mi/hr with gusts 30-40 mi/hr, W-NW.
No natural or human triggered avalanches have been reported or observed.
Over on the west side, about 3 to 4 inches of new snow was observed on the road leading up to Castle Lake. Overall, the west side has been recording more snow with the holiday weekend storm track.
Mountain Weather:
A cold, upper trough continues to advance southeastward this afternoon and tonight. Mt. Shasta has been sitting on the southern edge of the storm track and thus the somewhat lack luster precipitation amounts. Southern Oregon has been doing much better. One thing is for sure, it's cold out and there is a good chance if precipitation is falling from the sky, it's in the form of snow. Snow will gradually diminish through Monday morning and eventually come to an end Monday afternoon. While there will be a break, we are not done with winter weather. More on that later. For today, expect snow showers in the area, cold temps and westerly wind over higher terrain.
