Recent Observations:
Height of new snow from the beginning of Monday's storm is 9-12 inches. About 2 inches of new snow fell in the last 24 hours. Total height of snow on Mount Shasta is 82 inches. West winds have ranged from 7 to 30 mi/hr, gusting up to 55. Temperatures have averaged 21.5 ºF.
Warmer temperatures are accelerating the settlement and stability of the snowpack. Some weak layers exist within the upper regions of the snow. Signs and tests from yesterday indicate that they might be triggered by the force of a skier or snowmobile on steep, unsupported slopes. Winds at higher elevations were building small, reactive cornices.
Mountain Weather:
Snow levels are on the rise. They should peak tonight at 8,000 ft. It looks to be a damp, socked in day. Bring an extra pair of goggles. Expect clouds and low visibility. A bit of rain and snow may fall, but nothing of note. Temperatures will be around 34 ºF near 6,000 ft. Southwest to west winds will be light to moderate with strong to gale force gusts.
Temperatures will begin to drop again Thursday. Several inches of snow could fall above 4,000 ft Friday.
