Recent Observations:
Yesterday was a sloppy dripper out there. If you like snowball fights or giant snowman construction, conditions are prime. A handful of folks found a few donut holes of visibility, but heavy fog, mist, clouds and very poor visibility characterized the day.
- Below treeline, melt runnels in the snowpack were visible and trees were unloading snow rapidly.
- Near treeline, a skier noted some whoomphing within the snowpack. The snow has settled out several inches over the past couple days.
- A slab avalanche was observed in the Old Ski Bowl somewhere, but uncertain how recent, size, etc. Visibility was limited to only a couple of hundred feet at times.
- Minor roller balls on E/SE facing slopes at all elevation bands.
- Windy northwesterlies above treeline, max gusts reached 49 mi/hr, average wind speeds 20-25 mi/hr.
- No new snow. Total height of snow on Mount Shasta is 82 inches, 46 inches at Castle Lake and 48 inches near Mt. Eddy. Mean temperature is 33 degrees. Max temps reached 34 to 44 degrees yesterday, pending location.
Warm temperatures over the past several days has accelerated the settlement and stability of the snowpack. Overall, the snowpack is gaining strength, however some weak layers exist within the upper regions of the snow. Yesterday was the second day whoomphing could still be heard within the snowpack, but we have not had any resulting avalanches.
Mountain Weather:
The next system arrives in the Pacific Northwest late this afternoon into this evening. Southwest to westerly wind will increase tonight and peak tomorrow morning. Expect 50+ mi/hr wind speeds over exposed terrain above treeline. As for precipitation, we should get a little fresh squeeze, with water amounts expected near a half inch. Expect snow to begin later this evening with snow levels around 6,300 feet today, 5,500 feet tonight and 4,700 feet tomorrow. So, a bit of rain and snow tonight with increasing wind and cooling temps...that's the jist of it! After this system passes, a ridge will build back into place Friday and continue for the rest of the week.
