Recent Observations: 

Temperatures at the Old Ski Bowl have ranged from 29.5 to 39.5 deg F, averaging 35.5. Winds have been calm to light. The height of snow is:

  • 70.5 inches @ Old Ski Bowl
  • 39.6 inches @ Castle Lake
  • 43.1 inches @ Mount Eddy
  • 42.5 inches @ Ash Creek Butte

Snow is supportive for skinning and climbing. Sun facing aspects are softening up by early afternoon. Rocks are beginning to fall from ridge tops. Not much icefall has been observed, but there is plenty of rime ice caked to the windward sides of cliffs and crags.

No notable instabilities in the snowpack have been observed.

Mountain Weather: 

Sunny skies will prevail with some clouds moving in after 4 p.m. Freezing levels will drop slightly from 9,000 ft today to 7,500 ft tonight. Winds are picking up. Upper level winds will be in the 60-70 mi/hr range. This will create some turbulent conditions in the nooks and crannies of the mountain. Expect strong sustained winds and gale force gusts. Even if you're Mary Poppins, I'd leave your umbrella at home.
