Temperatures at the Old Ski Bowl have ranged from 35 to 48 deg F, averaging 41. Winds have been moderate to strong from many directions, though primarily out of the W-NW-NE. The height of snow is:
- 70 inches @ Old Ski Bowl
- 39 inches @ Castle Lake
- 42 inches @ Mount Eddy
- 42 inches @ Ash Creek Butte
Skiing and riding conditions are firm. Sunny aspects are softening by early afternoon. The wind kept some skiers from above treeline exploits yesterday. Some rockfall and, most notably, rime icefall, are a current hazard. Plenty of rime ice continues to cake Redbanks and other rocks on the upper mountain. Wear a helmet.
You couldn't buy an avalanche lately. No instabilities in the snowpack have been observed. Climbing conditions have been good. The wind will be a significant opponent for climbers today.
Mountain Weather:
It has been a windy one out there. North to northeasterly wind cranked it up a notch this morning, gusting to 80 mi/hr on Gray Butte, with steady wind speeds of 20-30 mi/hr. Expect windy conditions to prevail today in the mountains, with clear skies. Temperatures will linger in the mid 30's to low 40's. There is no precipitation in the forecast for the near future, but in the far extended forecast (late Jan/early Feb) it looks like the high pressure ridge breaks down, bringing in the next sets of winter storms.
