Recent Observations:
Moderate to gale force north winds hammered the mountain most of the day yesterday. Mean speeds were 25 mi/hr, maximum sustained 48, and maximum gusts 80. And that was at 8,000 ft. Lenticulars formed over the top. Temperatures at the Old Ski Bowl ranged from 29 to 43 ºF.
Snow surfaces are highly wind-affected, variable, and tracked out in the usual places. Smooth, soft turns might still be found as things warm up over the next few days. If you are creative and determined, you'll find them. Look to slopes receiving direct sun for the softest snow. Anything hit by the wind is scoured to crusts or exposed rock.
Climbing conditions on Mount Shasta are good. Rock and ice fall have been observed. An ice axe and helmet and crampons are mandatory tools to bring and know how to use if ascending up steep slopes at high elevations.
No signs of avalanches or instability have been observed for weeks.

Freezing levels will increase from 6-7,000 ft today to 9,000 ft tomorrow. Expect some morning clouds, then clearing. Winds are on the decline. You'll probably see some moderate north winds up high. Tomorrow the mountain looks to be downright calm. It'll be a good time to climb.
