Recent Observations:
Observations the past 72 hours have remained consistent: warm temperatures, wet snow, and variable crusts. Temperatures at the Old Ski Bowl weather station have remained above freezing the past 48 hours. This means the snowpack hasn't re-frozen at night, allowing liquid water to accumulate near and below treeline. Our current snowpack is wet and sticky with a variable surface crust near and above treeline. Stiff, icy conditions exist at higher elevations. New observations this week will be critical with the weather fronts arriving. Forecasters will be watching the new snow and wind carefully. As you head out this week, please consider submitting an observation to the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center. Even a brief 1-2 sentences goes a long way.

Mountain Weather:
Mother nature is turning on the water tap as we speak. Two strong but short-lived fronts are arriving this week, with the first one showing up today. We can expect rain or a rain/snow mix as the freezing level hovers around ~9,000-ft. By Tuesday, the freezing level is expected to drop to the elevation of popular winter trailheads, resulting in heavy snowfall and strong winds. The biggest challenge for backcountry travelers will be staying warm and dry. The National Weather Service summarized it this morning by saying "this front will likely bring...high winds to...ridges, Shasta Valley, and east side. High Wind Warnings are in place for these areas. This front continues to show heavy, but short lived precipitation with a strong atmospheric river indicated."
