Recent Observations:
Avalanche Gulch on Mount Shasta was the go-to yesterday for backcountry skiers. The gate on the Everitt Memorial Highway opened late in the afternoon the day prior. It was a rather mild day, partly cloudy and calm wind below treeline with temperatures reaching a high of 28° F. Wind blew primarily out of the west, with average speeds of 10 mi/hr, gusting to 42 mi/hr near and above treeline. A dusting of new snow had fallen overnight. You know how things go several days after a storm and with a good dose of sun: variable with a side of crust. Soft snow does linger in protected, shady areas. A nasty sun crust is widespread up to about 8,500 feet and supportable on skis above that. Wind affected snow exists above treeline, but smooth sections can be found. No signs of avalanche danger or persistent weak layers have been found.

Mountain Weather:
A winter storm warning is in effect from 4am Saturday to 4pm PST Sunday, issued by the National Weather Service. The next West Coast storm system will track southward across the Pacific Northwest and California today, producing moderate to heavy precipitation. The start of a prolonged period of snow, about 36 hours, will begin this morning. Precipitation rates will be high at times, with the heaviest in the next 6 to 12 hours. South to north, up slope flow will provide an enhanced storm. Temperatures look to remain cold. Southerly wind will average 15 to 25 mi/hr. Snow levels will rise to about 1,500 to 2,000 feet this afternoon, and while precipitation will decrease in intensity, it will not end. Another wave of energy will move onshore and showers will continue through the evening. Snow showers will remain through Sunday night, though intensity and amount will taper. Overall, the mountains to the west may pick up slightly more snow.
