Recent Observations:
The weather's behavior during a tour in the Eddy mountains yesterday was erratic and variable. We experienced sunny conditions, stormy conditions, and everything in-between. Signs of wind-loaded slopes were observed below leeward ridgelines and in wind-exposed terrain features both near and below treeline. A south and southeast wind direction redistributed snow from the previous westerly direction, refilling skin tracks and blowing off ridgelines and cornices. A weak interface was revealed in the top 20 cm of the snowpack during a CT test on tap 10. No other signs of unstable snow were observed and we did not discredit the chance they were lurking, given the weather's impact on the snow. In sheltered areas near and below treeline undisturbed snow with a right-side-up structure was found.
Mountain Weather:
A low-pressure trough parked off the coast of the Pacific Northwest continues to absorb cold and moist energy generated by other lows in the arctic region and eject them at the coast of California. The kick-off for another round of impactful winter weather starts this morning and will persist through Wednesdays morning hours. A winter storm warning has been issued for that period. With a southwesterly flow set in place, expect winds to blow from a south, southwest, and westerly direction at lite to moderate speeds with strong gusts. Temperatures will remain below freezing at 2,000 feet and above. If all plays out, the forecast zone could receive a healthy foot and a half of new snow by Wednesday morning.
