Snowpack Observations

Details

  • Height of storm total since 03/13: 60cm above 7000ft
  • No avalanches or signs of instability
  • The new snow is right-side-up and well bonded to itself and the old snow surface
  • Minor wind loading and small wind lips observed above treeline on S-SE-E aspects
  • No wind slabs observed
  • Roller balls on steep south aspects below treeline in the afternoon
  • Dry snow surfaces above 7500ft with 20cm of ski penetration
  • Height of snow ranged from 120-200cm between 7000-9200ft
  • Ski quality was good. Brief periods of sun caused snow surfaces to become moist below 7500ft on south facing aspects in the afternoon
  • Compression tests resulted in non-planar breaks within the top 60cm of the snowpack. Extended column tests resulted in no fracture (ECTX x2)

LOW danger and normal caution is advised for today.  If and when we see wind speeds increase on Mount Shasta,  fresh snow remains available for wind transport. Leeward slopes above treeline could see active wind loading and the avalanche danger will rise on those slopes. Triggering a wind slab is unlikely at the moment, but pay attention for changing conditions should winds pick up over the next couple days.

Generally safe avalanche conditions. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features.

Sunny skies and calm westerly winds made for a beautiful tour up Giddy Giddy/Avalanche Gulch today.

  • No recent avalanches or signs of instability
  • Previous wind loading above treeline on S-SE-E aspects but no wind slabs encountered
  • No active wind loading
  • Roller balls and pinwheels on steep SW-S-SE-E aspects up to 10k
  • Zipper crust on southerly aspects up to 8K
  • Despite wind ripples and small wind whales, snow surfaces have remained soft near and above treeline and ski quality is good (ski penetration 20cm)
  • Plenty of low density snow is available for transport
